PORTFOLIO
Rodrigo Arteaga's practice centers on the intricate relations between nature, culture, and representation. He works with material forms —printed images, books, and dioramas— from the monumental atlases, albums, and collections documenting finding of scientific expeditions in South America. By shedding light on the role of books and other display mechanisms in the construction and dissemination of scientific knowledge, his works demonstrate that this knowledge is not separate from the natural world but is subject to decay and succession in ways that resemble the organic processes of decomposition and recolonization. Many of his taxonomies are open and precarious, prompting reflection on how we order, exhibit, and circulate knowledge about nature. His interest in working across different fields has led to collaborations with specialists in areas such as microbiology, mycology, and ecology.
